Rural support businesses continue to be hard hit by the recent mining and gas resources boom where resources companies have chosen a fly-in, fly-out business model to bring skilled workers from urban areas to work on mining and gas projects as opposed to rural Australian settlement.

These resources companies offer above market salaries to attract skilled workforces and understandably, absorb available skilled workers from rural communities.

Rural businesses cannot afford to compete with large resource development companies, but also their businesses continue to suffer because salaries earned by fly-in, fly-out workers are repatriated to urban cities where these fly-in, fly-out workers live. Salaries earnt by urban migrants are not spent in rural businesses.
